Have you ever wondered how lab diamonds are made? With the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds, the differences between the two are often indistinguishable.
With their increasing popularity, it’s no surprise that more and more people are showing curiosity towards lab-grown diamonds. In this blog, we will delve into the world of these stunning gems, taking a closer look at the process of their creation, and what makes them a great option for those seeking to add them to their next piece of jewellery.
How are lab diamonds made?
Lab-grown diamonds are created using advanced technology in a controlled laboratory setting. One of the most common methods for creating lab-grown diamonds is the High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) process. In this method, a tiny diamond seed (a small diamond fragment or crystal) is placed in a growth cell, which contains carbon-rich materials.
High Pressure: The growth cell is exposed to extremely high pressure, mimicking the conditions deep within the Earth where natural diamonds are formed. This pressure can reach up to 1.5 million pounds per square inch (psi) or more.
High Temperature: The growth cell is then subjected to high temperatures, often around 2,200 to 2,500 degrees Celsius (3,992 to 4,532 degrees Fahrenheit). These high temperatures help the carbon atoms to arrange themselves into the crystal lattice structure, which forms the diamond.
Diamond Growth: Over several weeks to a few months, the carbon atoms start to attach to the diamond seed and grow, layer by layer, creating a larger diamond.
Cutting and Polishing: Once the lab-grown diamond has reached the desired size, it is removed from the growth cell and undergoes cutting and polishing, just like mined diamonds. This process brings out the diamond's brilliance and sparkle.
Grading and Certification: Lab-grown diamonds are then graded using the same 4Cs (Carat, Cut, Clarity, and Colour) as mined diamonds. Reputable laboratories issue certificates that detail the diamond's specifications and quality.
Quality Control: Throughout the entire process, strict quality control measures are in place to ensure the diamonds meet the highest standards.
Lab-grown diamonds are genuine diamonds with the same beauty and brilliance as mined diamonds. a testament to the wonders of technology, lab-grown diamonds offer customers a more ethical and environmentally friendly option for their jewellery.
