Have You Heard of Crater of Diamonds State Park?

Imagine being on holiday, sifting through a bit of dirt, and finding a real diamond.

That’s exactly what happened to a couple visiting Crater of Diamonds State Park in southwest Arkansas, USA. It’s one of the only places in the world where anyone can search for real diamonds—and keep what they find. How fun is that?

What’s it like?

From what I’ve read, you can rent a kit or bring your own tools, and most people try “wet sifting”—basically, washing gravel through mesh screens until something sparkly turns up. It’s a bit of a treasure hunt, and every now and then, someone gets lucky.

Found this month!

In July, Scott and Jennifer Freitas from Florida stopped in while on a road trip. After just three buckets of dirt, they uncovered a 3.36 carat white diamond—roughly the size of a blueberry! They named it The Dash Diamond after their dog, and the park staff described it as clear, naturally coloured on the edges, and beautifully shaped.

Apparently, finds like this aren’t that rare—over 75,000 diamonds have been discovered at the park since it opened, and the largest ever found there was a whopping 40.23ct.

Would you give it a go?

If you’ve ever done a bit of fossicking, or love the idea of gem hunting, this could be one to add to your travel list. It’s definitely going on mine! I love the idea of bringing home a little sparkle with a story behind it— can imagine turning a find like that into a totally one-of-a-kind jewellery piece? SO MUCH FUN!

So, what would you do if you found a diamond? Keep it? Sell it? Set it into something truly special?

Let me know—I love hearing your gemstone stories!

xx
